The Scottish Christian Forum on Assisted Dying has an informal structure with core members who make the key decisions on our policies and activities and a wider network of individuals who support our aims.
The core members at the present time are as follows:
- Professor Gareth Morgan (Convenor) has a degree in theology from the University of Bristol with a considerable focus on Christian ethics and he subsequently completed a doctorate focused in the sociology of religion. His main academic field was concerned with the role and regulation of charities especially faith-based organisations. Over the years he has served in a wide range of lay Christian ministry roles including leading public worship, outreach, and homegroups. He is active in a Roman Catholic parish in East Lothian.
- Dr Julie Lang was a chartered physiotherapist with Christian roots, primarily in the Roman Catholic tradition. She holds a doctorate from the University of Glasgow focusing on death and dying narratives in English literature. She is also a trustee of the charity Friends at the End SCIO.
- Rev Dr Scott McKenna has more than 30 years experience as a Minister in the Church of Scotland. He has written and spoken widely on the subject of Christian approaches to assisted dying. He is based in Ayrshire having previously ministered in North Lanarkshire and in Edinburgh.
- Mrs Sharon Morgan has a degree in communication studies and certificates in theology and in pastoral ministry. She is an active member of the pastoral team in her Episcopalian parish. She regularly leads prayers in public worship, quiet mornings and other Christian activities. She was formerly a bereavement visitor with the charity Cruse. Based in East Lothian, her pastoral work has a special focus on issues relating to death and grief.
- Rev Professor Glen Pettigrove is Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow and a member of the Church of Scotland. He has written widely on issues of Christian ethics, including on assisted dying.
In addition to the core members above, we have an extensive contact list of individuals who are supportive of our aims, some of whom have also contributed articles and ideas to help shape the Forum’s thinking. If you would like to be added to the list please email info@scfad.org.uk confirming that you are happy to support the broad stance of the Forum as set out on the home page. We are happy to include anyone who supports our aims, who identifies as a Christian, and who is normally based in Scotland.
