Online meeting with Ross Greer MSP: Monday 14 September 2026 3pm

The Scottish Christian Forum on Assisted Dying is delighted to welcome Ross Greer MSP as the speaker for our September 2026 meeting which takes place on Zoom.  He has agreed to speak on the theme: Legislating for assisted dying in Scotland: a Christian reflection.

Ross Greer has been an MSP for the Scottish Green Party since 2016 (at the time of his election he was the youngest ever MSP) and he is now Co-Leader of his Party. In the previous Scottish Parliament (2021-26) he was a firm supporter of the principles of Liam McArthur’s Assisted Dying for Terminally Adults (Scotland) Bill. (The Bill had strong support throughout its stages, but was defeated in the final Stage 3 vote on 17 March 2026.)

In his speech to the Scottish Parliament on the day of the final debate on the Bill, Ross said:  ‘For my part, I cannot reconcile myself with the prospect of denying those who face a life-ending illness the dignity of dying on their own terms. I will vote for the bill this evening.’

Ross Greer has always been open about his Christian faith – he is a member of the Church of Scotland – and we believe he is the only MSP who spoke in favour of the Bill from a personal Christian perspective.

This meeting takes place on a significant date, just after the Westminster Parliament holds an initial vote on an assisted dying Bill for England and Wales proposed by Lauren Edwards MP (continuing the Bill initially proposed by Kim Leadbeater MP). So we look forward to Ross Greer’s reflections on the next steps for legislation in Scotland.

The meeting with be chaired by SCFAD Convenor, Professor Gareth Morgan. Following opening prayers, we will hand over to Ross Greer to speak to us and then there will be time for questions. After Ross Greer leaves there will be time for further discussion about next steps for SCFAD. The meeting will finish no later than 4.30pm. The event will take place as a Zoom meeting (not a webinar).
